The Candela GentleLASE hair removal laser is one of five lasers that currently have FDA clearance for "permanent hair reduction". GentleLASE effectively removes unwanted body and facial hair. Traditional hair removal techniques such as shaving, tweezing and waxing, provide only temporary relief and may actually stimulate hair growth. Electrolysis, while effective, often requires years of ongoing treatments. All of these methods can result in scarring, allergic reactions, and ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair follicle without damaging delicate pores and structures of the skin. Because hair cycles through "growth" and "dormant" phases, and because during the "dormant" phase the follicle has no pigment, at least 2 or 3 treatments will be needed.

It was exactly 1975 when Shelby Owens left her comfortable home and thriving practice in Huntsville, Alabama and moved to Pensacola. It was during a newspaper interview that she was told by a reporter, Bob Thomas with the Pensacola Journal, that Pensacola was actually a Native American name for "city of hairy, red people." This unique name was given to the area after Don Tristan DeLuna's Spanish settlement was destroyed by a hurricane and the survivors of DeLuna's party united with the Native Americans living in the area. The offspring of these unions inherited body and facial hair from their Spanish parents. This hair was uncommon for Native Americans and resulted in a designation of the settlement in which they lived as Panzacola. The name was later changed to its present form by other settlers in the area.

Recognizing some irony in this story, Shelby set out to establish her electrolysis practice and build a rapport with the area's potential consumers of hair removal services. Active in both the Electrolysis Society of Florida and the Society of Clinical and Medical Hair Removal, Shelby has attained the highest credentials in her profession, including that of Certified Medical Electrologist, and continues to teach and write both for consumers and her colleagues in the hair removal profession. She also spent many years as an unpaid lobbyist in Tallahassee representing consumers of hair removal services by pushing for training and safety requirements for electrologists. Shelby attended Lasertrolysis of Naples, laser training school, where she worked with multiple hair removal lasers.
